The EU approves malic acid as a feed additive for all animals

According to the official gazette of the European Union, on March 11, 2022, the European Commission issued regulation (EU) No. 2022/415, which approved malic acid as a feed additive for all animal species in accordance with regulation (EC) no 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and the Council.

According to theannex, this additive is authorized as an animal additiveunder the category "technical additive"and the functional groupis "preservative" or "acidity regulator". The authorization end date is April 3, 2032. These Regulations shall take effect on the twentieth day from the date of promulgation.

Malic acid is a chemical found in certain fruits and wines. It is used to make medicine. People take malic acid by mouth for tiredness and fibromyalgia. In foods, malic acid is used as a flavoring agent to give food a tart taste. In manufacturing, malic acid is used to adjust the acidity of cosmetics.

L-malic acid is a form that can be used by organisms. It is oftencombined with compound amino acid injection (an important nutritional drug after surgery) to improve the utilization of amino acids, which is especially important for patients with postoperative weakness and liver dysfunction. L-malic acid is a good drug for treating liver disease, especially hyperammonemia caused by liver dysfunction.
